Two years ago eDreamsOdigeo embarked on a transformation journey both around the business model and how we manage work. It became a journey that started with practising Kanban and continued to the realms of Enterprise Services Planning (ESP). Peter Kerschbaumer tells the story directly from the trenches.

Hace dos años, eDreamsOdigeo se embarcó en un viaje de transformación tanto en el modelo de negocio como en cómo manejamos el trabajo. Se convirtió en un viaje que comenzó con la práctica de Kanban y continuó a los reinos de Enterprise Service Planning (ESP). Peter Kerschbaumer cuenta la historia directamente desde las trincheras.
En esta charla presentaremos nuestra experiencia aplicando un modelo integrado de agilidad que complementa Kanban con perspectiva de alineamiento organizacional inspirado en Hoshin Kanri y, y de Exploración mediante resolución de problemas inspirada en el pensamiento A3, que hemos aplicado en empresas chileans y en el despliegue de la estrategia de innovacion y emprendimiento en el Gobierno de Chile.
EN: Alignment, Flow and Exploration beyond team level
In this talk we will present our experience applying and integrated model of agility, which complements Kanban with an organizational alignment approach inspired in Hoshin Hanri, and an approch of Exploration using Problema Solving inspired on A3 Thinking, which has been applied in chilean corpotations and in the startegy desployment of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Chilean government.
Nina will give an insight into the organic Kanban system, implementation and progress at Tupalo.com since September 2010. She will explain how they introduced the method to their team, how the board and system changed over the years, and what evolution finally led to the third version of their Development Kanban Board. She will also share their experiences, challenges and successes when scaling Kanban to other departments such as Marketing and Community Management.

Kanban para fabricación de maquinaria especial
Somabe es una ingeniería que se dedica al diseño y fabricación de maquinaria especial. Hace cuatro años empezaron a usar Kanban para gestionar las tareas a lo largo de todo el flujo de trabajo. Para ellos Kanban es como una radiografía que les permite VER el estado del trabajo y sus dependencias con otros trabajos.
Aitor Eguren, Gerende de Somabe, presentará diferentes aspectos de la mejora de la organización que les ha aportado el uso de Kanban. Para mencionar algunas: fiabilidad en los plazos de entrega, localización de problemas ocultos e identificación de puntos de mejora, utilización de un lenguaje único y sencillo para todos los departamentos, crear una cultura de equipo.
EN: Kanban for producing special machinery
Somabe is an engineering company dedicated to the design and production of special machinery. Four years ago they started using Kanban to manage their tasks throughout the entire workflow. For them Kanban is like an X-ray that allows them to SEE the state of the work and its dependencies with other works.
Aitor Eguren, General Manager of Somabe, will present different aspects of the organizational improvement that Kanban brought them. To mention a few: reliability in delivery times, localization of hidden problems and identification of improvement points, use of a single and simple language for all departments, create a team culture.
EN: It’s common sense and reason that brought us out of the caves and allowed us to build the greatest civilization known to men. But it didn’t happen overnight. There was not a silver bullet that instantly made it all happen - it took us thousands of years. It’s just how things work in our part of the universe.
And yet, despite the abundance of experience, information, and technology available today, we still believe that there is one magic framework, process or method that will solve all our problems. We all believe in the mythical shortcut that the "alchemanagers" are searching for.
I think it’s time that we end all this - teams should not be forced or tricked to use one thing or the other without a real understanding and a rational reason behind it. I think it’s time that we let our common senses be heard again. It’s about time that we admit to ourselves that we can only learn as we make mistakes and we should stop blindly copying others.
We should take risks if we want to succeed. If we always want to be on the SAFe side and more or LeSS run to DAD every time someone breaks our Nexus, we will eventually create the greatest danger ourselves - complacency and politics.

Muchas organizaciones y personas asocian las funciones del Departamento de Calidad con "obtener certificados", "realizar auditorías internas", "asignar no-conformidades", "definir procesos y procedimientos", etc. Pocas encuentran valor real en esto.
¿Puede cambiar esta situación? ¿Cómo puede un departamento de Calidad alinear procesos y necesidades empresariales, facilitando el flujo de trabajo e involucrando a las personas en su mejora?

The Quality Assurance Function in Lean Kanban Organizations
Lots of organizations and people associate Quality Department functions with “obtaining certificates”, “making internal audits”, “assigning non-compliance issues”, “defining processes and procedures”, and so on. Not so many of them find real value in them.
Can this situation change? How can a Quality department align processes and business needs, facilitating the workflow and involving people in its improvement?
At the same time, agile organizations growing in maturity realize that they need a Quality Assurance function to support the development of homogeneous work routines and decision making procedures.
In this presentation, based on her experience with different companies, Teodora will speak about how integrating Kanban and CMMI or PMBoK develops new style Quality teams, focused on resolving concrete problems and helping project and service teams to improve their capability to meet customer expectations and business objectives.

Organizations need to cope with a fluctuating, fragmented, and often, conflicting demand. Ideas for fulfilling customer needs or solving a business problem can be generated much faster than they can be realized. This is the source of much frustration and tension (and loss of value). Improving the capability to deliver (e.g. with Kanban) only solves part of the problem. What is needed is customer pull as a way to relieve the tension between those that create or capture the demand and those that fulfill the demand. In this presentation we will discuss Customer Kanban and Upstream Kanban as enablers for customer pull. They are the start of a journey towards Business Agility by engaging the whole organization, not just the delivery team.

Las organizaciones necesitan hacer frente a una demanda fluctuante, fragmentada y a menudo conflictiva. Over the past 10 years I had the privilege to live and witness the interplay of shifting paradigm and the effect it has on existing systems in a solid number of contexts. Sometimes I was allowed or asked to influence the interplay, and there were occasions I was lucky enough to be able to lead the dance and understand on my own skin the exact meaning of fast strategic thinking in emerging contexts. I had the chance to create daring products, teach people how to do that and research why the culture gets created.
My talk will focus on comparative presentation of kanban use in these endeavours in different industries with very different paradigmatic assumptions such as education, financial industry and politics. I will present processes and tools, but mostly I will talk about concrete structural and psychological gains, challenges and shifts that kanban culture characterized by visualisation, WIP limits, managing flow, rhythm, explicit policies, open sharing and collaboration leads to, such as, on the gain side, better products, feeling of certainty and stability in highly experimental or poorly known environments, integration of people and/around their results, reduced risk and danger, or, on the challenging side, disintegration of motivation- and value-killing Authority in education (grading), business (KPIs) and politics (“the art of the possible”) to name just a few of the paradigmatic assumptions of our current culture.

ES: Desafío de Cultura Kanban en Educación, Negocios y Política
En los últimos 10 años tuve el privilegio de vivir y presenciar la interacción entre el paradigma cambiante y el efecto que tiene sobre los sistemas existentes en un número sólido de contextos. A veces se me permitía o se me pedía que influyera en la interacción y había ocasiones en que tuve la suerte de ser capaz de dirigir el baile y entender sobre mi propia piel el significado exacto del pensamiento estratégico rápido en contextos emergentes. Tuve la oportunidad de crear productos audaces, enseñar a la gente cómo hacer eso e investigar por qué la cultura se crea.
Mi charla se centrará en la presentación comparativa del uso kanban en estos esfuerzos en diferentes industrias con supuestos paradigmáticos muy diferentes como la educación, la industria financiera y la política. Presentaré procesos y herramientas, pero en su mayoría hablaré sobre las ganancias estructurales y psicológicas concretas, desafíos y cambios en la cultura kanban caracterizada por la visualización, los límites de WIP, la gestión del flujo, el ritmo, las políticas explícitas, el intercambio abierto y la colaboración conduce a mejores productos, sensación de certeza y estabilidad en ambientes altamente experimentales o poco conocidos, integración de personas alrededor de sus resultados, reducción de riesgos y peligros o, en el lado desafiante, desintegración de la motivación y Autoridad en la educación (calificación), negocios (KPIs) y política ("el arte de lo posible") para nombrar sólo algunos de los supuestos paradigmáticos de nuestra cultura actual.
Límites de crecimiento, desequilibrios en la carga o arreglos que provocan fuegos en otros sitios son estructuras sistémicas invisibles a nuestra comprensión lineal del mundo. Como practicantes de Kanban muchas veces reforzamos los valores, principios y prácticas, y el sistema nos empuja incesantemente y regresa a un estado estable. Limits of growth, shifting the burden or fixes that backfire are systemic structures invisible to our linear understanding of the world. As a Kanban practitioner many times we reinforce the Kanban values, principles and practices and the system tirelessly kicks us out in and returns to a stable state.
